Manas is situated
at 40 kms from barpeta. Elevation of the Wildlife Sanctuary is 70 mt. The
forest got the status of the ‘world heritage sanctuary’. In 1928 Manas was
declared as a reserve forest which later changed to tiger reserve in 1973.
There are 18 tiger reserves in India. Manas Tiger Reserve is ninth in its
size. Manas Wild Life Sanctuary is spread at an area of 2800 sq kms and the
Tiger reserve is of 540 sq kms in it.
To Reach
By AIR – Nearest airport is Guwahati, which is well connected with
the rest of the country by Alliance Air, Indian Airlines & Jet Airways
By Rail – Nearest railhead is at Barpeta Road. All long distance
trains to and from Bangalore, Kochi, Chennai, Kolkata are available from
Barpeta.
Wildlife to be seen
Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Elephant, Rhinoceros, Leopard,
Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Wild Boar, Water Buffalo, Wild Pig, Swamp
Deer, Hog Deer etc. In winter different specie of migratory birds come to
Manas. Important of these are Riverchats, Forktails, Cormorants, Pelican,
Ruddy Shellduck, Indian Hornbill, Great Pied Hornbill. |
