Jorhat

Jorhat city is the district headquarters of Jorhat district in Assam. Jorhat is probably the second most important city of Assam after Guwahati. It is the gateway of the upper Assam and Nagaland.

In the north of the Jorhat district, the Brahmaputra River forms the largest River Island of the world – Majuli, which spreads over 925 sq kms area with a population of more then 1.5 lakh.

Way to Majuli, Jorhat, AssamIt was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom. It is the home of many historical monuments related to Assamese culture. The ancient capital of Ahom Kings, Jorhat is well known for its cultural heritage and tea plantation. The place is the ideal place for tea plantation due to its climatic condition. There is a tea research centre in Tocklai, which is 5 km away from Jorhat.
One of the important festivals of North East India, Jorhat Tea Festival held here every year. Assam Agricultural University can be another place of tourist attraction in Jorhat.

Being in Jorhat means you are in the cultural center of the state of Assam. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, the first assamese writer to get prestigious Jnanpith Award is from Jorhat. Geographically situated in the Upper Assam region, Jorhat has the historical city of Sivasagar (the former Ahom Dynasty's Capital) on one end of the district and the Kaziranga National Park on the other.

How to Reach

By AIR: Jorhat Airport is one of the busiest airport in Assam. Jet Airways and Alliance Air flights are available from Jorhat, for Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore & Dimapur.

By Road: A good number of private & govt. buses operate between Jorhat and Kaziranga, Guwahati, Sibsagar, Tezpur etc. Jorhat is well connected with all the major cities in North East India. NH 37 is passing though the city.

By Rail: Jorhat is connected with the main line through ‘Farketing – Mariyani’ loop of Northern Frontier Railway Zone of Indian Railway. All important trains run through Mariani which is 16Kms from Jorhat City.
