Forming the
western part of the state the entire Garo Hills having an area of
approximately 8,000 sq km. is densely forested and hence one of the richest
spots in bio-diversiy.
Tura, the headquarter of West Garo Hills, which was also the headquarter of
composite Garo Hills before two more districts of East and South Garo Hills
were created, is 323 kms from Shillong via Guwahati named after a powerful
goddess Durama Imbama. The Tura town is situated at the foot of Tura peak.
The 1400 mt peak throws a challenge to the climbers and one can opt to stay
overnight. It requires an interesting mix of a hike cum climb for about 5
kms, but the views from the summit are ample rewards for your labours. Tura
and its surroundings is window to the ethnic lifestyle of the Garo people.
The region is famous for its Wangala Dance.
Tura is approachable via Guwahati, and is 323 km s from Shillong. The
journey from Guwhati takes 6 hrs. To go to Tura, it is best to hire a taxi
from Guwahati Airport or go by bus.
