En route to Tsomgo
lake, numerous waterfalls fast rushing mountain streams and the Rhododendron
rich Kyangnosla Alpine Sanctuary makes the trip all the more thrilling.
Kyangnosla Alpine Sanctuary is 26 kms from Gangtok and is situated at an
altitude of 3780 mt. The sanctuary, with an area of 4 sq km has a breath
taking variety of flowers which remain in bloom from May to August. The
earliest to flower are the different species of Rhododendrons followed by
Primulas, Blue Poppies and Clematics in June, Purple Irises, Pale Yellow
Poppies and the Strawberry in July. The last to bloom is the Polygonum,
which covers the entire landscape. The place is valuable for variety of
medicinal herbs.
It is also an ideal habitat of Red Panda. Bird life is represented by
different types of language thrushes in shrubs and on the forest floor. The
Blue Whistling thrush, Redstarts and Forktails near waterfalls and hill
streams; Black Eagles, Black Winged Kite and Pheasant flying in the sky.
Many migratory birds stop at this place during their migration to warm
Indian plains from Siberia during winter months and vice-versa. |
