The literal
meaning of Tsomgo is the source of the lakes in Bhutia language. Tso means
lake and Mgo means head. The lake is about 1 km long, oval in shape, 15 mt
deep and is considered extremely sacred by the local people. Upto mid May
the lake remains frozen, during this period the tourist may experience
snowfall.
The lake is a home for Brahmin Ducks beside being a stopover for various
migratory birds.
Altitude of the lake is 3780 mt and the lake is situated at a distance of 38
kms from Gangtok.
The lake can be visited during tourist seasons – March to Late May and
September to Mid-December
Tourist are requested to take light woolen clothing in spring and heavy
woolens in winter season.
