Cherrapunje (Sohra)

56 kilometers south west of Shillong situated at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, Cherapunjee still continue to be the wettest place on earth with more than 12,000 mm of rain annually, from June to October Cherrapunjee is cloaked in thick mist most of the time but when the weather is fine, one can see Cherrapunjee at its glorious best. It is most spectacular with scores of white – foamy water falls cascading down from great heights, breathtaking landscapes covered by lush greens everywhere. Cherrapunji is situated on the southern tip of a plateau that looms over Bangladesh. The cliffs of Cherrapunji are the first place hit by moisture that forms over the Bay of Bengal. The lovely town is also famous for its limestone caves, orange and honey, a Centre of the Khasi Culture and literature. The oldest Theological College in this region is located here, established by the Welsh Presbyterian Missionaries in 1888, known as Cherrapunjee Theological College.   • By Air – Nearest Major airport is Guwahati, direct flights available from Kolkata, Delhi, and Bagdogra. It also has link to the rest of the country and with Bangkok. The nearest airport is at Umroi, 35 kilometers from Shillong, which connects this lovely town of Tura by air.  There is a helicopter service from Guwahati Airport to Shillong. Guwahati Airport is 180 kilometers from Cherrapunjee.

    Bangladesh - One can reach Cherrapunji may enter India via Dawki Landport with Bangladesh. From Osmani International Airport, Sylhet connected to Zia International Airport, Dhaka and Shah Amanat International Airport, Chittagong, tourists can reach Tamabil border (on the Indian side is Dawki) in just 60 minutes drive along 52 kilometers smooth, metalled highway
  • By Rail – There are no rail lines in Cherrapunji or in Meghalaya. But the nearest major railhead is at Guwahati, which is at a distance of 170 kilometers. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of the country by broad gauge rail, road and airways.
  • By Road – By the side of the Guwahati Shillong road, it is 60 kilometers from Shillong and 170 kilometers from Guwahati. Much of the infrastructure is basic and many roads outside city are in are not in good condition due to heavy rains and poor maintenance, but within the city the roads are quite good.
