Adi Baba Mandir

Adi Baba Mandir, also known as the Old Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, is a revered shrine located near Kupup along the historic Old Silk Route in East Sikkim. Situated at an altitude of around 13,100 feet (4,000 metres), the temple is dedicated to Baba Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier of the Punjab Regiment who is believed by many to continue protecting soldiers stationed along the India-China border even after his death in 1968. The temple has become a symbol of faith, patriotism, and devotion, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.

According to local legend, Baba Harbhajan Singh appeared in the dreams of fellow soldiers after his passing and instructed them to build a shrine in his memory. The original temple, now known as Adi Baba Mandir, was established near the place associated with these events. Visitors can see Baba's personal belongings, including his uniform, boots, and bed, which are maintained with great respect by the Indian Army. Many devotees believe that Baba continues to perform his duties and protect the region, making the temple one of the most unique military shrines in India.

The journey to Adi Baba Mandir is equally memorable, passing through breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, winding mountain roads, alpine meadows, and picturesque viewpoints. Nearby attractions include Kupup Lake (Elephant Lake), Jelep La Pass, Tukla Valley, Thambi View Point, Zuluk, and the famous Old Silk Route, making it an essential stop for travelers exploring East Sikkim.

The temple is best visited between April and June and September and November, when the weather is pleasant and the roads are more accessible. Since the temple is located in a protected border area, Indian visitors must obtain the required permits to travel through the Old Silk Route, while foreign nationals are subject to restricted access. Adi Baba Mandir offers a unique blend of history, spirituality, military heritage, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery, making it one of East Sikkim's most remarkable attractions.
