Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest and most spectacular lakes in the world, situated at an altitude of approximately 17,800 feet (5,430 metres) in North Sikkim, near the India-China border. Named after Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), the revered Buddhist saint who is believed to have blessed the lake during the 8th century, Gurudongmar Lake holds immense religious significance for both Buddhists and Sikhs. Surrounded by snow-clad Himalayan peaks and rugged mountain terrain, the lake is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and breathtaking high-altitude scenery.
According to local legend, Guru Padmasambhava touched a part of the frozen lake to provide water for the local people, and that section is believed to remain unfrozen even during the harsh winter months. The serene setting, dramatic landscapes, and spiritual atmosphere make Gurudongmar Lake one of the most iconic attractions in Sikkim. Due to its high altitude, visitors are advised to spend only a limited time at the lake and acclimatize properly before the journey to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

Gurudongmar Lake is located in a protected border region, and Indian nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) issued by the Sikkim Government to visit. Due to security restrictions, foreign nationals are not permitted to visit the lake. The best time to visit is from April to June and October to November, when the weather is relatively stable and the roads are accessible. Winter brings heavy snowfall, which may restrict travel. With its extraordinary altitude, sacred significance, and awe-inspiring Himalayan surroundings, Gurudongmar Lake remains one of the most remarkable and unforgettable destinations in the Indian Himalayas.
