Sumendu Lake, popularly known as Mirik Lake, is the heart of the scenic hill town of Mirik in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. Surrounded by pine forests, manicured gardens, and mist-covered hills, the lake is one of the most loved and iconic landmarks of the region.
The lake was developed in the late 1960s as part of a planned initiative to transform Mirik into a peaceful hill resort. Before its development, the area consisted of natural wetlands and small streams flowing through the valley. Recognizing the natural beauty and tourism potential of the location, the local administration undertook a project to create an artificial lake that would blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.
The name “Sumendu” is believed to be derived from local linguistic and cultural roots, symbolizing calmness and gentle beauty. Over time, the lake came to be known simply as Mirik Lake among visitors, though its original name remains deeply respected by locals.
A graceful footbridge called Indreni Pul, meaning “Rainbow Bridge”, was built across the lake, connecting the two sides and adding to its charm. The bridge quickly became a symbol of romance and togetherness, making the lake a favorite destination for couples, families, and photographers.
As Mirik grew as a tourist destination, Sumendu Lake became its central attraction.
