Tendong Hill

Tendong Hill is a sacred mountain and one of the most popular trekking destinations in South Sikkim, located near Namchi and Ravangla. Rising to an elevation of approximately 8,530 feet (2,600 metres), the hill is revered by the indigenous Lepcha community, who believe it saved their ancestors from a great flood. According to Lepcha folklore, the hill rose like a horn to provide refuge, making it an important spiritual and cultural landmark. The name "Tendong" means "The Uplifted Horn" in the Lepcha language.

Covered with dense forests of oak, magnolia, bamboo, rhododendron, and a variety of medicinal plants, Tendong Hill is rich in biodiversity. The area is home to numerous species of birds, butterflies, orchids, and small Himalayan wildlife, making it a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

The Tendong Hill Trek is the main attraction and usually begins from Damthang, about 14 km from Namchi. The trek covers around 6 km through lush forests, crossing wooden bridges, moss-covered trails, and peaceful mountain landscapes. The route is considered moderately easy and can be completed in about 2 to 3 hours, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers.

At the summit, visitors are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga Range, the Teesta and Rangeet river valleys, and the neighbouring hills of West Bengal. On exceptionally clear days, parts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and even the plains of North Bengal can be seen from the viewpoint. The summit also features a small monastery, prayer flags, and a tranquil meditation area, adding to the hill's spiritual charm.

Every year in August, the Lepcha community celebrates the Tendong Lho Rum Faat Festival, commemorating the legendary flood and expressing gratitude to the sacred hill. The festival showcases traditional dances, rituals, music, and local customs, offering visitors a unique cultural experience.

The best time to visit Tendong Hill is from March to May and October to December, when the weather is pleasant and visibility is excellent. Spring is especially beautiful, with blooming rhododendrons and lush greenery enhancing the trekking experience.
