Ngadak Monastery

Ngadak Monastery is one of the oldest and most historically significant Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim. Located near Namchi in South Sikkim, the monastery was founded in the 17th century during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal by Tensung Namgyal, one of the three revered lamas who played an important role in establishing Buddhism in Sikkim. The monastery belongs to the Nyingma school, the oldest tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

Originally built as a large monastery complex, Ngadak Monastery suffered extensive damage during the devastating earthquakes of the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite this, several ancient structures, including the original stone pillars and ruins, have been carefully preserved. A new monastery was later constructed nearby, allowing monks to continue religious practices while protecting the site's historical legacy.

The monastery is admired for its traditional Tibetan architecture, colourful prayer flags, beautifully painted murals, sacred statues, and peaceful prayer halls. Inside, visitors can see images of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Lord Buddha, and other revered Buddhist masters, along with ancient scriptures and religious artefacts that reflect the rich spiritual heritage of Sikkim.

Surrounded by forests and rolling hills, Ngadak Monastery offers a tranquil atmosphere ideal for meditation and quiet reflection. Ngadak Monastery is often included in sightseeing tours of South Sikkim along with Samdruptse Hill, Siddhesvara Dham (Char Dham), Namchi Rock Garden, and Temi Tea Garden. Its peaceful environment and historical importance make it one of the most rewarding places to visit in the region.

The best time to visit is from March to June and September to December, when the weather is pleasant and the skies are generally clear. Early mornings offer the most peaceful atmosphere for exploring the monastery and its surroundings.
